Greene County Health System has been awarded approximately $2.28 million in state-administered grant funding to expand cancer screening, early detection and follow-up care for residents across five West Alabama counties.
The funding is part of Alabama’s Rural Health Transformation Program and will support efforts to improve access to healthcare services in Greene, Hale, Marengo, Pickens and Sumter counties.
For many residents living in rural communities, accessing specialized healthcare services can mean traveling long distances. The initiative aims to address those challenges by making cancer screening and related services more accessible to individuals living in underserved areas.
Through the grant, Greene County Health System plans to strengthen cancer detection services, improve access to diagnostic testing and help patients receive appropriate follow-up care.
Early detection plays an important role in cancer treatment, often increasing the likelihood of successful outcomes. By expanding screening opportunities, the initiative could help identify health concerns sooner and connect patients with the medical services they need.
The investment is particularly significant for West Alabama’s rural communities, where limited healthcare resources and transportation challenges can create barriers to preventive care.
The $2.28 million award is part of a larger round of rural healthcare investments announced by Gov. Kay Ivey on October 1, 2026. The statewide announcement included nearly $55 million in additional grants intended to strengthen healthcare services in rural Alabama.
For Greene County Health System, the funding represents an opportunity to expand its reach beyond Greene County and provide additional healthcare resources to neighboring communities.
Additional details about when expanded screening services will become available have not yet been announced.
The project is expected to strengthen preventive healthcare efforts throughout the region while helping more West Alabama residents access potentially lifesaving cancer screenings closer to home.
