Tuscaloosa’s final remaining Winn-Dixie location will close next month, marking the end of an era for the grocery chain in the city.
The Winn-Dixie store in the Five Points area, located at 4205 University Blvd. E, is scheduled to close on February 1. Ahead of the closure, liquidation sales are already underway. Beginning January 7, all beer and wine will be discounted 30%, while grocery items and general merchandise will be marked down by up to 40%.
The closure is part of a broader restructuring effort by the company. Winn-Dixie is not shutting down entirely but is undergoing a major strategic shift, rebranding as The Winn-Dixie Company and narrowing its focus primarily to Florida. As part of that transition, dozens of stores across Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and parts of Georgia are being closed or sold, with many locations expected to reopen as ALDI or other regional grocers such as Piggly Wiggly by early 2026.
The move is being led by parent company Southeastern Grocers, which is exiting markets outside of Florida to concentrate on its core operations, including its liquor store business. The shift follows a prior sale agreement and reflects a broader effort to streamline operations and strengthen its presence in key markets.
For Tuscaloosa residents, the Five Points closure represents the loss of the city’s last Winn-Dixie, ending the chain’s local footprint after decades of service.
