The Town of Akron will welcome residents, visitors, artists, health professionals and university partners Saturday for the 2nd Annual Art & Healing: Stories of the Black Belt, a free community event celebrating the culture, creativity, health and stories of Alabama’s Black Belt.
The event will be held Saturday, Aug. 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Akron Senior & Community Activity Center, 131 5th Ave., Akron, AL 35441. Admission is free, and the event is open to all ages.
The Town of Akron is serving as a community partner for this year’s event, which will bring together partners from several colleges and programs across The University of Alabama, along with Flourish and other community participants.
Organizers say Art & Healing is designed to raise health awareness while creating a space for residents to share their experiences through storytelling and artistic expression.
Attendees can expect live music, poetry and other performances, photography and art exhibitions, free health screenings, community resources, a food demonstration and refreshments. A storytelling component will also give participants an opportunity to share their personal health journeys and experiences.
Local artists, growers and makers are also expected to participate, highlighting the talent and traditions found throughout the Black Belt.
For Akron, hosting the event provides an opportunity to showcase the community while connecting residents with health information, educational partners and cultural experiences.
The celebration comes just days before the start of September and offers families an opportunity to spend part of their Saturday enjoying art, music and fellowship while learning more about resources available to support healthier communities.
