Bringing Eye Care to Alabama’s Black Belt
UAB Community Eye Care is the mobile outreach arm of UAB Eye Care and the UAB School of Optometry. The program works to make comprehensive eye care more accessible to lower-income and underinsured patients, including residents of rural Alabama and the Black Belt. (University of Alabama at Birmingham)
UAB says its optometry students, faculty and residents collectively examine nearly 22,000 patients each year through various community outreach efforts. Community Eye Care provides services at schools, senior centers, community events, shelters and other locations. (University of Alabama at Birmingham)
UAB’s Black Belt outreach has also included mobile clinics offering comprehensive eye examinations and free glasses to residents in need. Partnerships with local organizations help the program reach residents who may face barriers such as a lack of insurance or transportation. (University of Alabama at Birmingham)
Saturday’s Eutaw event provides another opportunity for Greene County residents to receive vision care closer to home.
