The University of Alabama will observe Suicide Awareness Week Sept. 21–27 in Tuscaloosa with prevention training, educational programs and a campus awareness walk.
Organized through the UA Counseling Center’s Tide Against Suicide initiative, the week is intended to teach students, faculty and staff how to recognize suicide warning signs, talk with someone who may be struggling and connect them with help.
Programs include QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) training, Talk Saves Lives sessions from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and Blue Button Training. The week concludes Sunday, Sept. 27, with a Suicide Awareness Walk at the UA Student Center Plaza.
The effort emphasizes that suicide prevention is a community responsibility and that people do not have to be mental-health professionals to help someone in crisis. Students needing support can contact the UA Counseling Center at 205-348-3863, while anyone experiencing a suicidal or mental-health crisis can call or text 988.
