Aspiring food entrepreneurs and local growers looking to turn their summer harvest into income will have an opportunity to learn the essentials of operating legally and safely during an upcoming workshop hosted by the Tuscaloosa County Extension Office.
The event, titled “Market Ready: Licenses, Permits, & Food Safety Basics,” is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Tuscaloosa County Extension Office, located at 1800 McFarland Blvd. E. in Tuscaloosa. The office is located on the second floor above Tropical Smoothie Cafe.
Organizers say the workshop is designed to help participants better understand the steps required to prepare homemade or farm-produced foods for public sale. Topics are expected to include food safety practices, required permits and licenses, and other important information for individuals interested in selling products at farmers markets, pop-up events, or through small food businesses.
The workshop is being presented through the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, a partnership between Auburn University and Alabama A&M University.
Community members interested in attending can RSVP using the QR code on the event flyer or by calling 205-349-4630.
The event aims to provide practical guidance for residents hoping to make the most of their “summer bounty” while learning how to navigate the business side of food production safely and responsibly.
