Students across West Alabama will have the opportunity to explore the world of modern manufacturing this summer through a free, hands-on STEAM camp hosted by Shelton State Community College.
Shelton State’s Workforce Development division is inviting students entering grades 8 through 12 to take part in the “Introduction to Modern Manufacturing” camp, designed to give participants real-world experience inside a working machining lab.
The camp will take place over two days:
June 9, 2026 for students entering 8th and 9th grade June 10, 2026 for students entering 10th through 12th grade
Each session will run from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Shelton State Machining Shop on the Martin Campus, located at 9500 Old Greensboro Road in Tuscaloosa. Lunch will be provided.
Organizers say the camp is ideal for students interested in technology, engineering, and hands-on learning, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how everyday products are designed and created.
Participants will:
Learn how computers control machinery through CNC programming Work with real equipment to shape and form metal parts Melt and mold plastic into usable products Design, build, and test their own creations Experience a real-world machining lab environment
The camp is free to attend, but space is limited, and early registration is encouraged.
