In a small town like Aliceville, businesses don’t just serve customers—they become part of the community’s identity. For more than four decades, The Shoppers Guide has done exactly that. And behind its continued success is a story of resilience, determination, and local pride, led by longtime owner Karen Long Huff.
Karen Long Huff’s journey with The Shoppers Guide began in the early 1990s, when she first stepped into the business handling bookkeeping. What started as a behind-the-scenes role quickly grew into something much bigger. Over time, she expanded her responsibilities—learning the ins and outs of page layout, advertising sales, and the overall operation of a community publication.
That hands-on experience would later prove invaluable.
The Shoppers Guide, a long-standing print shop and weekly publication serving Pickens County, has been a trusted resource for local advertising and information for over 45 years. Known for its fast, reliable service, the business offers everything from business cards and flyers to invitations and banners—combining both digital and offset printing with custom design support. For many residents and small businesses, it has long been a one-stop shop.
But in 2011, the future of The Shoppers Guide was suddenly uncertain.
After a damaging storm created significant challenges for the business, the company faced the possibility of shutting its doors for good. For many, it may have seemed like the end of an era—but not for Karen.
Determined to preserve something she knew was vital to the community, Karen spent eight months working to secure the funding needed to take ownership. On Halloween 2011, she officially purchased The Shoppers Guide, stepping into a leadership role at one of the most critical moments in its history.
What followed was a testament to her work ethic and vision.
Within just five years, Karen had successfully paid off the business—an achievement that speaks volumes about her discipline and commitment. Under her leadership, The Shoppers Guide not only survived but continued to serve as a reliable platform for local voices, businesses, and announcements.
Today, the business operates out of a historic Aliceville building originally constructed in 1902. Inside, Karen has created a space that blends past and present—preserving the building’s character while adding personal touches that make it feel welcoming and familiar. It’s more than a workplace; it’s a reflection of the care she puts into everything she does.
Like many businesses, The Shoppers Guide faced new challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. At one point, its weekly publication was reduced from 16 pages down to just four. Yet, even in that difficult season, Karen remained steady. As the community began to recover, so did the paper—now growing back to eight pages, a sign of both resilience and renewed local engagement.
Through every challenge—storms, economic shifts, and a global pandemic—Karen Long Huff has remained committed to keeping The Shoppers Guide alive and relevant.
In Aliceville and across Pickens County, her work has ensured that local businesses continue to have a voice, residents stay informed, and a longstanding tradition carries on.
Karen’s story is more than a business success—it’s a reminder of what can happen when determination meets purpose. Her leadership has not only preserved a legacy but strengthened it, making her a true innovator and pillar of West Alabama.
