The Tuscaloosa County School System is looking to fill immediate openings for school bus drivers and will offer free training beginning later this month for people interested in getting behind the wheel.
The district’s New Driver Training Class begins Tuesday, Sept. 22, and provides the training necessary for participants to earn a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with passenger and school bus endorsements, as well as a State of Alabama School Bus Operator’s Certificate. TCSS is also offering training for people interested in working as bus aides.
According to a current AlabamaWorks job posting, TCSS is seeking to fill approximately 30 bus driver positions. The posting lists the job as permanent, part-time employment averaging about 20 hours per week and lists pay at $86 per day, depending on experience. Applicants must be at least 21 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent. (Alabama Works)
The district says the positions include health insurance and retirement benefits. The school-based schedule can also make the job an option for people looking to work around another job or other responsibilities. Training Schedule
New driver classes will be held from 8:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Northport Bus Shop, located at 3700 68th Avenue in Northport.
Scheduled training dates are Sept. 22, 23, 24 and 29, followed by Oct. 1, 6, 7, 8, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22 and 27.
Oct. 28 will be reserved by appointment for trainees who need additional hours before moving on to the state certification class. Paperwork deadlines are Sept. 22, Oct. 8 and Oct. 21. (Tuscaloosa County School System)
The New Driver State Certification Class is scheduled for Nov. 2-4 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. each day at the Northport Bus Shop.
Testing with a state examiner is projected for Nov. 5, 6, 9, 10, 12 and 13. Those tests will be conducted individually by appointment. (Tuscaloosa County School System)
TCSS says it provides the training needed for prospective drivers to obtain the required licensing and certification.
