Residents interested in learning more about Alabama’s native snakes and how to safely coexist with them are invited to attend a free Snake ID and Safety Workshop hosted by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The workshop will be held at the Alfa Environmental Building, located at 316 Bartram Street, Livingston, AL 35470, and will be led by Extension Agent Dylan Taylor.
Designed for homeowners, outdoor enthusiasts, farmers, landowners, and anyone who spends time outdoors, the workshop will provide valuable information on identifying Alabama’s common venomous and nonvenomous snake species. Participants will also learn about snake conservation, practical ways to reduce snake encounters around homes and workplaces, and appropriate responses in the event of a snakebite.
“Understanding the role snakes play in Alabama’s ecosystems and knowing how to safely respond when encountering one can help reduce unnecessary fear and prevent dangerous situations,” Taylor said.
The workshop will include guidance on:
Identifying common venomous and nonvenomous snakes found in Alabama. Understanding the ecological importance of snakes. Preventing snake encounters around homes, farms, and workplaces. Reducing the risk of snakebites. Responding appropriately during a snakebite emergency.
The event is free and open to the public, but registration is encouraged.
To register, contact the Sumter County Extension Office at (205) 652-9501. For additional information, contact Dylan Taylor at (205) 394-3615 or djt0014@auburn.edu.
The Alabama Cooperative Extension System encourages community members of all ages to attend this educational program and gain practical knowledge that promotes both public safety and wildlife conservation.
