Animal welfare advocates, nonprofit leaders, veterinarians, shelter professionals, rescue organizations, and community stakeholders from across Alabama are being invited to mark their calendars for a groundbreaking event focused on strengthening the future of companion animal welfare in the state.
The PHASE Coalition has officially announced the 2026 Alabama Animal Welfare Leadership Summit, scheduled for Friday, August 14, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Fellowship Hall, Forest Lake United Methodist Church in Tuscaloosa.
Carrying the theme “From Silos to Solutions,” the summit aims to bring together approximately 50 to 60 leaders from across Alabama to discuss collaborative strategies for building a more balanced and effective animal welfare system.
PHASE, which stands for Proactive Household Animal Stability and Equity, is focused on keeping pets and families together through proactive, community-based solutions. Organizers say the summit will provide a unique opportunity for leaders from different sectors to move beyond isolated efforts and work collectively toward long-term improvements in animal welfare.
“Our goal is to create meaningful conversations that lead to practical solutions,” organizers said. “By bringing together leaders from shelters, rescues, veterinary medicine, government agencies, and community organizations, we can strengthen partnerships and better serve both animals and families throughout Alabama.”
The event will center on four key objectives:
Learn – Expand knowledge and stay informed about current challenges and opportunities in animal welfare. Connect – Build stronger relationships and partnerships among organizations and stakeholders. Collaborate – Share ideas and develop practical, actionable solutions. Lead – Strengthen Alabama’s overall animal welfare system through unified leadership.
The summit’s mission reflects a growing recognition that sustainable animal welfare outcomes require coordinated efforts among organizations, communities, and policymakers. Discussions are expected to focus on strategies that support pet retention, increase access to resources, and improve outcomes for companion animals statewide.
The PHASE Coalition’s guiding message, “Working Together to Keep Pets and Families Together,” underscores the collaborative spirit of the event.
The announcement also features a quote from Alabama native Helen Keller, whose words reflect the summit’s emphasis on partnership and collective action:
“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”
Additional information and registration details are expected to be released closer to the event date.
