Alabama is set to receive over $4.9 million from a recent $149.7 million multistate settlement with Mercedes-Benz over emissions fraud, where the automaker used “defeat devices” in diesel cars and vans (2009-2016 models) to cheat emissions tests, polluting far beyond legal limits, according to AG Steve Marshall. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced the payment, part of a national deal resolving claims that Mercedes violated state laws by selling vehicles that emitted harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) at excessive levels during real-world driving, with the settlement also providing consumer relief.
